We were up bright and early yesterday to register for the first day! After an exciting Vocal Jazz reading session and an interest session hosted by the inspiring Francisco and Elizabeth Núñez, I headed to another session led by Dr. Jeff Buettener about gypsy repertoire in Ukraine and Russia. He moved at a fast pace so we could learn as much as possible within the short hour. We discussed the contradiction between gypsy stereotypes and their true heritage, which includes roots from all over Europe, the lack of a native land, and their independence from material needs.
Dr. Buettener played music that he recorded on a trip to Europe to demonstrate the gypsy musical style. Together, we all sang excerpts of traditional gypsy music that he had arranged for us. The ornamentation style and its history greatly interested me; I haven't yet mastered the quick trills and soulful sound that are captured in gypsy music, but I'm definitely eager to learn more and share this style of music with my peers and future students! -Laura White, Sophomore '17
